NHS Mission Statement
Please Note, NHS is a different organization than NJHS at middle school; therefore, membership in NJHS does not automatically transfer students into NHS at McKinney Boyd High School.
REQUIREMENTS TO BE IDENTIFIED AS AN “ELIGIBLE STUDENT”:
The administration will run the eligibility report AFTER 1st semester grades are finalized each year.
Students must have a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Students must be in ‘good standing’ with administration, meaning no OSS or DAEP placements in the previous semester. ISS placements will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Sophomores and juniors will be included in the identification process AFTER 1st semester grades are finalized. **Freshman are not eligible for NHS membership**
Eligible members will be notified with an invitation to apply via their student email in late February/Early March. Additionally, students will receive an invitation to join the NHS Canvas course where they will complete and submit their official application.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Students will have 3 weeks to complete the application process; however, it is recommended that students do NOT wait until the last week to submit their application.
Deadline for the application process is firm, so be sure all requirements are fulfilled PRIOR to the deadline.
Students will request teacher recommendations from 3 of their core subject teachers (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) and 1 elective teacher. A google form link will be provided to students to email to their teachers.
Students will write a short essay that focuses on one of the 4 pillars of NHS. Information about each pillar will be available in the Canvas course for students to review. The essays will be read and scored by a faculty council. Applicants will have access to the grading rubric during the application window.
Students will be required to review the Bylaws and Service Criteria within the Canvas course and certify that they have read and understand the requirements.
Students will fill out a short Google Form questionnaire.
POST-APPLICATION EXPECTATIONS:
Once the application window closes, the faculty council will begin reading and grading the essays.
NHS Sponsor will review the teacher recommendations to ensure applicants are in good standing with their teachers.
NHS Officers will verify that all requirements of the application have been completed.
Students will receive a decision letter to their student email address by the end of March/beginning of April.
Students who do not meet the requirement will be notified as to the reason for the decision.
Students who are qualified to join will be invited to the NHS Induction Ceremony which will be held at the end of April. **Attendance at this ceremony is not required to be inducted into NHS.
Students who are inducted to NHS during April of their sophomore or Junior year will be considered members the following school year—their Junior/Senior year. Students can begin completing their service hours in May for the next school year.
NEW STUDENTS TRANSFERRING IN TO MBHS:
NHS members from prior school will need a letter from former school sponsor in order to be able to join the MBHS NHS program.
To be included in the identification process, a student must be on campus for at least one full semester.
IN ORDER TO REMAIN A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING:
Students will need to complete 15 service hours per semester- half in community and half for school.
The first 15 hours must be completed by December 31st and can begin May 1st.
Students should review the NHS Community Service Criteria for specific rules/requirements for service hours.
Students must maintain a cumulative, weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Students cannot be assigned OSS or DAEP. ISS assignments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Students will be required to pay $20 in dues per year they are in NHS. This goes towards offsetting the cost of Graduation medals and stoles.
If a student completes their NHS requirements during their Junior year, they will automatically remain in NHS for their Senior year.
**Students will receive a Graduation stole for 1 year of NHS service. They will receive an NHS medal for their 2nd year of service. These will be passed out in May of their senior year during the Senior Celebration event.
