Health & Wellness

Please encourage hand-washing with your student(s) and lets see if we can all stay healthy for a bit. I'm sure the exposure to all the other students at the beginning of the school year causes some kids to get sick, but some good ol' fashioned hand-washing never hurt anyone.

Parking Across Lake Forest

If you are parking across Lake Forest in the neighborhood by Boyd, please realize the police enforce the 'No Parking' signs and write tickets for violators. Maybe find a new place to wait or pick up your student if thats the case.

August 16th, 2024

Good evening Bronco Families!

We've completed our first full week of school and it has been pretty amazing! I've enjoyed walking the halls, meeting students, and stepping into some classrooms. It really is a blessing to be back!

Morning Security Detection Systems

Opening the third morning entrance on the south end, with some adjustments we made to our procedures, really helped the flow of students into the building in the mornings. Thank you for your patience with me and with the school as we improved each day.

  • For those who drop-off at the front entrance, please remember to pull all the way up to the 'drop off' sign if being directed to do so by staff and for students to only cross at the crosswalk.

  • If your student is dropped off at the front and would like to walk around to the south end, they are welcome to do so. I would encourage this for band students, as our Band Directors are at the south entrance.

  • Students only need to remove the B.L.U.E. (Binders, Laptops, Umbrellas, Eyeglasses) items prior to walking through the scanner. If the detection system alerts, all other items can remain in the student's backpack or bag and can be checked quite quickly. It takes WAY more time and effort for students to fish alllllll kinds of random items out and then try to put it back in. Most students walk through without issue, and for those who have to be checked, it is a very quick process.

Afternoon Departure

In case you were wondering where you could pick up your student after school, that should be the front of the school. Our school buses depart in afternoon from the south lot, student drivers are leaving from the north lot, and car rider pick-ups should occur via the front of the school.

Pep Rallies

Our first pep rally will be on Friday, September 13th, which is Homecoming Week! If you're a parent who is planning on attending, here are some things to keep in mind.

  • All visitors will need to park somewhere acceptable in the North Parking Lot (don't block the fire lane, etc)

  • All visitors will need to pass through the evolv security detection system

    • My advice is to leave your bags locked in your car, you don't need them for the pep rally. Bring your ID, your cell phone, and your car keys and you should be pretty set!

  • Parents will be able to enter starting at 8:45 AM through the North Entrance and (after passing through our security scanning station) may go to the main gym (you will not be permitted to walk around the building, sorry!)

  • There will be a Google Form for Parents that we send out as the date gets closer. This will let us know you are coming and therefore speed up the check-in process.

Parking Permits

If your student plans on driving to school here is the parking lot page that explains all the details for purchasing parking permits:

https://www.mckinneyisd.net/o/mbhs/page/parking

Grade Point Averages (GPAs)

The grade point average (GPA) and class rank has been finalized with information from the 2023-24 school year and is now viewable in Home Access Center (HAC). If your student applied to colleges in June or July using the GPA and Rank prior to August 2024, they will need to ensure they are using the finalized numbers now posted in HAC. Please update college portals or applications, as necessary. Feel free to reach out to the campus registrars if you have any questions.

Meet the Teacher Night ("Open House")

Meet the Teacher Night is Monday, September 9th.

  • Come have a hot dog and some chips with us from 4:30pm-5:30pm in the cafeteria

  • Walk around the cafeteria and see the clubs and organizations available to students

  • Meet the Teacher (at their classrooms) will be 5:30pm - 7:00pm

Seniors - Class of 2025

I think thats all the important information from this week! My apologies if I missed anything. Thank you for everything you do as Parents and Guardians, we're thankful for all of you and we can't wait to see your students again on Monday!

Best regards,

Dr. Hodum

Good afternoon Bronco Families!

Security Detection Systems

Thanks to the hard work of several staff members, we had a much smoother experience with our security detection system today. We were able to get our earliest students inside starting at 6:45am and our last student through the front entry by 7:41am. The goal is to get all students used to the pace and process and staff used to their side of the process, so I have no doubt we'll get that time down to 7:20-7:25am by the end of next week. Next week, we will not be counting tardies for students waiting to enter at the front before school. If we can get the time down to the goal (7:20-7:25am), we will start counting 1st period tardies in 10 days, on Monday, August 19th.

Student Laptop Cases

Less than 1% of students became confused which laptop was theirs when we handed them around the detection device back to students. Thats a number greater than zero, however, so if your student wants to make it easier on themselves, please consider buying a laptop case to recognize or decorate. My laptop case is clear and I have stickers all over it (Boyd emblem, Star Wars, etc). It takes a long time to remove stickers placed directly onto the laptops themselves, so please do not do that, put the stickers on a case. If the laptop has a blue asset tag on it, that is an M1 Macbook Air. If it has a red asset tag, it is an M2 Macbook Air.

Student IDs

Students did a great job getting IDs made on the stage during all lunches the last two days. Starting next week we'll be making them locally (the yearbook company was here with their photographers and ID printers the last two days). Everyone should have their student ID by now. The replacement cost of a student ID at any of our three McKinney ISD high schools is $5. Have your student put their Student ID in their phone case or buy a lanyard and hang it around their neck (thats what I do), or put it in their wallet.

Schedule Change Request Form

Thank you for your patience waiting for schedule change requests. The form will go live Sunday and can be found here:  https://forms.gle/JrYEmmjEJPfue7Vb6 . The form is not currently accepting responses, but it should sometime Sunday evening, I believe 5pm. Any changes that occur will be made next week.

Advanced/AP Exit Reminder

Please remember that Advanced/AP course exits are at the end of Quarter 1 this year. Any further questions should be directed to the Counselors.

Seniors

We had a class meeting today for our Seniors, it was great to see the Class of 2025. They're a great group! Senior Sunrise on 8/23 at 6:45AM on the baseball fields, and students may bring their own breakfast! I look forward to seeing them there!

Lunches

I know a few of our lunches are pretty full. We have seats available, and I understand it may be uncomfortable to sit with others we may not know or may not know well. I'm actively trying to get more tables and/or seats to help accommodate. On nice weather days, we also have tables outside for use.

Previous Newsletters & School Website

Our school website has been updated and relocated, if you could please update your bookmarks to this link. We have also placed my previous newsletters in one location, found here, where you can search for previous items (and clearly you can search through your previous emails). Please let me know if you have questions!

I believe thats all I have for you all, please get some rest this weekend and we'll see you on Monday!

Day One is in the Books!

August 8th, 2024

Parents,

Day One is complete! It was the last 'first day' for our Seniors, and a great first day of high school for our Freshmen!

We had a hiccup with one of our entrances to start the day, but that is just one of our many safety and security processes. We got kids inside so we can do our favorite part, the Teaching & Learning, and we made a new plan for tomorrow. We'll model for our students what it means to dust yourself off and try again, and thats exactly what we'll do tomorrow.

Our schedule change request form will go live on Sunday if you have change requests. I'll send that out this weekend in my normal newsletter I send weekly on Friday or Saturday (I try to always send it on Friday).

Thanks for your students, they were the absolute BEST today and we LOVE having them back!

Talk to you soon,

Dr. Hodum

First Day of School Information!

August 7th, 2024

Good evening!

I have great news ... school starts tomorrow! We're super excited for all the returning Broncos as well as our new ones, we're ALL family so its good to have everybody in the building tomorrow.

Lets hit the highlights:

Schedules:

  • Schedules go live (meaning "viewable") at 5pm today, Wednesday, August 7th. Remember that we only change schedules if 1) you are MISSING a class, or 2) have a duplicate course (either on your schedule or something you've already gotten credit for)

  • At some point in the near future (possibly over the weekend, but thats a soft commitment on my part), we will re-open schedule change requests. We need a few days to get kids in classes who enroll starting the first day or two. Its a lot of people and they need to get a schedule so they can get to class and start learning also.

  • Schedules can be printed off for your student by one of our staff members in the rotunda/cafeteria area of Boyd if your student doesn't have the ability to check HAC on their laptop or phone to see their schedule. Most students should go the digital route. We allow cell phone usage between classes in the hallway so they're welcome to look up their schedule and then ask for help if they can't find a certain classroom.

Student IDs:

  • Although we are checking for student IDs every day, we know our freshmen won't have them coming into school tomorrow. We will be able to hand them out in 3rd period.

  • Anybody who wasn't here to get a photo taken at Bronco Camp or for whatever reason needs another ID can get one made on the stage during all 5 lunches Thursday and Friday of this week.

  • We'll be lenient for a few days but after that (and this is district-wide) we'll be charging $5 to replace student IDs. It is a lot like a Driver's License, you can't drive a car without one...well, you can't get into Boyd without a Student ID. The goal is to keep everyone safe and make sure only the students who are supposed to be here are in the building.

Evolv security detection system:

  • Speaking of coming into the building, every student and adult visitor coming into the building will need to go through the detection systems.

  • Tell your student three things for me, in regards to the detection systems:

    • 1) Dr. Hodum says he's excited for you to be here BUT... 2) If you don't want to be caught with it, don't bring it here.

    • And lastly, 3) If you bring it here, there are consequences. So don't bring it here. Make good choices.

Communication:

  • Our new school website is live and we'll be updating it constantly, as well as using Facebook , Instagram, and this email alert system. Please download the McKinney ISD app so you can receive our news there!

First Day Drop Off:

  • Students can come in the Front Entrance or North Entrance starting at 6:45 AM. Athletes and Band students should know where to go from their Director / Coach(es).

  • Parents drop off at the Front entrance.

  • Buses drop off in the North Lot. Special Education buses drop off in the back for students that need assistance.

  • Please don't let your kids out of your car in traffic. I'd rather your kid get a tardy than get hit by a vehicle. Please don't.

First Day Pick-up:

  • Kids can leave out of ANY door. The buses leave from the South Lot, Special Education buses leave from the back. Student drivers leave from the North lot (mostly).

PTO:

If I left anything off, I apologize! I'll get all of my emails compiled and put on our new website soon so you can go back and read things you might've forgotten or missed. Thanks, and I'll see our students tomorrow!

GO BRONCOS!

New Security Screening Process at MBHS

August 6th, 2024

Dear Boyd Parents and Guardians,

The district has installed new Evolv weapons detection systems at our campus, and we plan to begin using the new process starting the first day of school. All students arriving in the morning will use the entrances on the North End or the Front Entrance of the building (doors will open at 6:45 AM), to be screened prior to entering the building. Fine Arts and Athletics students will have a specific time and entry point through an Evolv system that will need to be coordinated with their coach or director.

The Evolv system’s technology will offer an added layer of protection to our campus safety and security program. Everyone who comes during regular school hours will be screened – this includes students with late arrival and any parents or other visitors to campus.

Prior to walking through the screening area, students and visitors will be asked to remove laptops from their backpacks so they don’t set off an alarm. Some common items like umbrellas and eyeglass cases can cause an alert, so it’s best to carry them separately or leave them at home. If the system alerts a concern, the student or visitor will be directed to a security check where a campus administrator will search the flagged location.

As a reminder, identification is also required to enter our building. Students should have their school identification card (School ID) and visitors must bring their driver's license for entry. Students who lose or forget their School ID will be required to go through the Evolv system before going to the ID pickup location if that is within the interior of the building.

The Evolv system is being used in other districts around the country and at large entertainment venues, so it is known for screening large groups quickly; however, as our Boyd staff implements this new process, there could be a few delays. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to ensure Boyd is as safe as possible.

Evolv has provided a video that you can watch here. We also have an Evolv FAQ for your review.

Sincerely,

David Hodum

Principal

A Message from Dr. Hodum

August 1st, 2024

Hello Broncos!

Dr. Hodum here, back to provide you with some more information about the start of the school year!  This is a LONG email as there are several pieces of information from various parties, so please read thoroughly, even if it looks like it is from the previous email I sent out (new details have been added).

August 1, Thursday - Student Schedules

  • Schedules will be viewable after 5 PM in Home Access Center (HAC) which can be found in Single Sign-On (SSO) if you have completed registration and turned in your Proof of Residency (POR).

  • Please look through your student’s schedule and make sure it is accurate for the course requests that were made.

  • Please understand that sometimes we have to assign alternative electives in order to make your student’s schedule work.

  • There will be an opportunity to request a schedule change if it is an allowable change.

  • The schedule change request form can be found here:
    https://forms.gle/JrYEmmjEJPfue7Vb6

  • Here are the reasons why we cannot do schedule changes:

    • 1. Different lunches, different teachers, or different elective choices.

    • 2. Reduction in rigor at this time.  For example, you cannot go from an AP class to a regular-level class or an Advanced class to a regular-level class.  You will be able to drop after the first quarter in accordance with the AP/Advanced Contract.

    • 3. We cannot remove a fine arts or athletics period.  You will need to visit with the coach or director first before we will remove those classes.  Once they approve and they notify us, then that class can be removed.

    • 4. All of this and more information about schedule changes and AP/Advanced class drop information can be found in our Academic Planning Guide on the McKinney ISD Website.
      https://www.mckinneyisd.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/2024-25-High-School-Academic-Planning-Guide-011624.pdf

  • We will make schedules ‘invisible’ or not-viewable again over the weekend and through the beginning of next week to work on these change requests.

  • Schedules will become visible once again on Wednesday, 8/7, the day before school starts, at 5 PM.

  • Once school begins on Thursday, August 8th, our counselors will be focused on providing schedules to new students and will not be working on schedule changes until new Broncos are enrolled.

August 3, Saturday - Bronco Camp - 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM

  • This is an incoming freshmen/9th grader event (since all freshmen are new to Boyd)

    • New students in 10th-12th grades are also welcome if they'd like to learn more about the school and get a tour of the building, but please remember the event is designed for freshmen and their families.

    • Parents are not required to attend.

  • Please park on the North End of MBHS by the gyms; the doors open at 8:00 AM.

  • We start Bronco Camp at 8:30 AM in the gym. Students will sit separately from their parents in order to expedite the next step of their morning.

  • Students will be divided into groups and take a school tour, learn about the Bronco Way, and get their Student ID picture taken (we’ll hand out IDs once school starts).

    • Student IDs will be needed to enter the building during the school year.

More information about student drop off/pick up procedures will be sent early next week.

  • Parents will move to the auditorium for an informational meeting.

  • Parents will receive information from counselors, administration, PTO, and the School Resource Officers (SROs).

  • Parents have the ability to ask questions before heading to the cafeteria.

  • Parents and students will be able to meet in the rotunda (the very middle of the school, next to the cafeteria) as tours end, which will be around 10:30 AM.

  • Students are welcome to show their parents around Boyd after 10:30 AM,
but everyone will need to exit by 11:30 AM, please.

August 7, Wednesday - Schedules are viewable again at 5pm in Home Access Center (HAC) which is housed in SSO.

August 8, Thursday - The First Day of School

  • We will not print schedules prior to the 1st day of school but students should receive a copy during 1st period on the first day.

  • Juniors and Seniors with late arrival (or any other student without a 1st period) may pick up their copy of their schedule from the cafeteria.

Please reference McKinney ISD's 2024-25 Academic Calendar if you are curious about other dates.

Regarding Outstanding Student Fees

  • In previous years, if a student had outstanding fees on his/her account, early schedule release was blocked until those fees were taken care of.
MISD is switching all payments to MySchoolBucks for the 2024-25 school year. Since the process of transferring all fees to the new payment portal has not been completed yet, McKinney Boyd High School will not block schedules from being accessed, even if your student still has outstanding fees.

  • Within a few days, you will be able to view and pay for your student’s fees in MySchoolBucks. If you have not registered with My School Bucks yet, you can do so at   https://login.myschoolbucks.com/users/register/getsignup.action?login_hint=&clientID=schoolbucks . You can also send a check or cash with your student to pay with the bookkeeper in the front office.

  • Please keep in mind that outstanding fees and fines will prevent your student from getting their parking stickers/permits, participating in certain student events, or receiving their graduation tickets.

  • We will be contacting those families with outstanding fees throughout the school year to get those fees collected.

A Message from MBHS PTO President Penny Maple:

Dear Bronco Families -

We at the PTO are so excited to welcome both new and returning families back for another fabulous year at McKinney Boyd!  We had a very successful year last year, and were able to support many projects and programs at the school, including:

  • Selling snacks, drinks, and spirit wear daily at the School Store during lunch. The kids (and staff) love it!

  • We funded Teacher Needs with extra classroom and project supplies, over and above teacher budgets.

  • We assist Communities in Schools with Back-to-school supplies and have an annual tradition of supporting the winter Holiday Food project, providing food and a holiday meal for Boyd families in need.

  • We were able to significantly increase our Scholarship Awards to graduating seniors through the McKinney Education Foundation this year.  We created a new endowment called the Steadfast Supporter award that gave $2500 to a family who had been PTO members for all four years!  We also awarded four $1000 scholarships (two for PTO members, two selected from all Boyd applicants) and four $1000 First In Family scholarships to graduating seniors who are the first in their families to receive their high school diploma.

  • We provided various Staff Appreciation meals and snacks to our hardworking Boyd Staff

  • We made donations to McKinney Project Graduation and MISD Police Academy.

With your support, we look forward to doing all that and more this year! We are asking for your support by joining the PTO as a member.  We are now launching a brand new site on the Membership Toolkit platform, with which many of you are probably familiar.  It’s a “one-stop shop” for all things PTO, including membership, volunteer opportunities, and an online spiritwear store!  So please visit our site HERE to register for your account and join today!  If you need help or a step-by-step, click HERE. And, although we LOVE our volunteers, your membership does not obligate you to do anything extra!

We have some awesome new spiritwear, and you get exclusive access as a PTO member, so check it out today!  You can preorder HERE, and then pick it up at Bronco Camp, or at the school store on Fridays, starting August 16th.

We look forward to seeing you soon….. GO BRONCOS!!

Penny Maple, Boyd PTO President

A Message from our Nurse, Patricia Aranibar:

Prior to dropping off, all paperwork needs to be completed and have all appropriate signatures. If you need to come to the clinic outside of the days and times listed, before coming, please contact us at 469-302-3414 so arrangements can be made.

Stay healthy and safe,

A Message from the Bronco Band Booster:

Hello Bronco Families,

Your Bronco Band Boosters are in the process of searching for band sponsors and a volunteer to help work on the band website.

The Sponsorships will help support scholarship opportunities, the marching show, etc. for the 2024-2025 school year.   There are multiple levels of sponsorship available.  Please contact our band revenue team at boydbandrevenue@gmail.com if you would like to sponsor the band or know of a company that might be interested.   A detailed list of our sponsorship levels, donation form, etc. will be sent for your consideration.

We are also looking for a parent volunteer to help with our Boyd Band webpage.  If you have web design experience and would be available to help we would love to hear from you.  Please send a note to our revenue team at boydbandrevenue@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with the webpage design.

We look forward to seeing you at the games this season!

Go Broncos!!

Need Student Computer/Technology Support?

We currently have student technology support planned between 11:00am and 2:00pm on Friday August 2nd, Monday August 5th, and Tuesday August 6th. Please take advantage of this support prior to the first day of school!

A few other important items:

  • Your student’s teachers should start reaching out via email next week before school starts to introduce themselves.

  • Our cell phone policy remains the same as last year and is consistent with the other high schools in McKinney ISD.

Cell phone usage is not permitted during class time or in classrooms.

Students may use their cell phones before school, after school, between classes, and during lunch.

Cell phones will need to be placed in student backpacks, which should be away from the students in the designated area determined by the teacher.

Alternatively, some teachers have a cell phone pouch that will be used, and backpacks will again be placed away from students in a designated area.

Students will not be allowed to take their cell phones to the bathroom during class time.

  • If your student is driving to school, please purchase a parking permit/sticker for the school year.

  • The school store, run by PTO, should be open on Monday, August 12th.

  • If you need a Verification of Enrollment (VOE) for your future driver, please have your student visit their house principal’s office administrative assistant.
