New Mobile App for McKinney ISD Families: BusZone

McKinney ISD, and bus provider Durham School Services, have a new mobile app for MISD families: BusZone.

BusZone allows parents, guardians, and students to monitor the location of a particular bus and/or possible delays in a bus arriving at a specific stop. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play. A parent must have a smartphone, tablet, or similar device to download the app. Use of the app is purely voluntary. No cost is associated with the app; however, associated data charges may apply and will be the user’s responsibility.

Getting Started with BusZone:

  1. Download the BusZone app on your mobile device (iOS, Android)

  2. Enter the school access code: 3021MISD.

  3. Look up your child’s bus route number in the Home Access Center (HAC).

  4. Enter your child’s name and six-digit student ID (no “s” before the ID).

  5. Set up alert zones to receive notifications by email or text.

When your child’s bus enters an alert zone, you will receive notification by email or text.

This flyer contains all the information you need including a convenient QR code to access the user guide. Additional information can be found on the BusZone Support Page including a How-To video found in the BusZone Bus Tracking section.

January 7, 2025

Dear Lion Families,

It was wonderful to welcome the students back this morning! While we are excited to have them with us this week, we understand that. Pete Dukas and his weathermen friends may have other plans. We’ve heard forecasts predicting snow later in the week, and if school is canceled, the district and campus will communicate the information as quickly as possible.

Academic Excellence Ceremony
Out of an abundance of caution, we are rescheduling the Academic Excellence Ceremony from this Thursday evening to next Wednesday, January 15. Students receiving Red or Silver cords will need to arrive by 5:30 PM for staging. The Red/Silver ceremony will begin at 6:00 PM.

Students receiving Black cords should arrive by 6:15 PM for staging. Parents attending the Black cord ceremony will be able to enter the auditorium at 6:45 PM. The Black cord ceremony will begin at 7:00 PM.

Schedule Adjustments
Due to various factors, some students may find that their schedules have changed this semester. It’s important that all students check HAC to confirm their current schedule. Please note that additional changes to class levels may still be necessary.

Final Exam Make-Ups
Students who need to make up missed exams must do so by Tuesday, January 14. Any exams not made up by this date will receive a grade of zero. Remember, exams count for 1/7 of the semester average.

Posting Grades
We plan to post grades in HAC by 5 PM on Friday, January 10. While weather may cause some delays, we will do our best to stay on schedule.

Tardies
Tardies reset at the start of the semester. Students may have up to 2 tardies per semester (not per class) without penalty. We are incredibly proud of how our students managed punctuality last semester. On many days, the school-wide tardy count was fewer than 40—an impressive achievement. Thank you for helping us maintain such a strong commitment to timeliness!

Absences
We are pleased to share that our attendance reached an all-time high last semester, with a nearly 94% attendance rate—well above our post-Covid average of 92%. This semester, just like last, parents may submit up to 4 parent notes for absences. We greatly appreciate your ongoing dedication to school attendance.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to excellence. Let’s make this semester another successful one!

Warm regards,

Dr. Kent

December 20, 2024

Dear Lion Families,

As we wrap up the first semester, I wanted to provide some important updates regarding your child's academic progress. The first semester ends on December 20, 2024, and report card grades will be viewable in the Home Access Center (HAC) on January 9, 2025 at 5:00 PM.

In addition to report cards, 9th grade parents will also have access to your child's MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) results.

Students in 9th and 10th grade will have their GPA and class rank calculated at the end of the school year.  Our 11th grade students will have their GPA and class rank calculated at the end of the first semester as well as at the end of the school year.  Lastly, our seniors will have their GPA and class rank calculated at the end of the first semester and at the end of the third quarter for final ranking purposes.

To assist you, I have included a guide on how to access HAC, information to better understand the MAP results, as well as additional information about GPA and class rank:

  • How to Access HAC: LINK

  • MAP results: LINK

  • GPA information: LINK

Thank you for your partnership in supporting your child’s success.  I encourage you to review these results with your child and have meaningful discussions about their learning progress.  Should you have specific questions regarding a grade, I encourage you to reach out to that individual teacher.

Charge those laptops!

Feed the Lions in 2025!

The MHS PTO needs your help volunteering in the Roar Store. We offer snacks, drinks, ice cream, school supplies, clear bags, and occasional surprise treats. Enjoy spending time at MHS and making students happy in 2025!

As we wrap up the first quarter, I wanted to provide some important updates regarding your child's academic progress. The first quarter ends on October 10, 2024, and report card grades will be viewable in the Home Access Center (HAC) on October 18, 2024 at 5:00 PM.

In addition to report cards, students in grades 6 through 9 will also have access to your child's MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) results. The MAP assessment provides valuable insights into your child’s current learning level and helps track academic growth throughout the year.

To assist you, I have included a guide on how to access HAC, as well as information to better understand the MAP results.

  • How to Access HAC: LINK

  • MAP results: LINK

Thank you for your partnership in supporting your child’s success.  I encourage you to review these results with your child and have meaningful discussions about their learning progress.  Should you have specific questions regarding a grade, I encourage you to reach out to that individual teacher.

Dear Lion Families,

This Thursday marks the end of our first quarter of school. For students involved in UIL activities, this grading period will be an opportunity to regain eligibility, but students may lose eligibility as well. Grades will be posted in HAC by 5 PM on Friday, October 18.

Student Drop-Off Clarification

Our primary drop-off location is the lane directly in front of the main entrance, accessible via Wilson Creek by the marquee. Parents are also permitted to drop off students in the parking lot off Graves Street, adjacent to the main office. However, please be mindful that this area also serves daycare students. Keep traffic to one lane and watch for parents with young children in the crosswalk. The back entrance off Graves Street is designated for buses only; please do not drop students off there. All students must be dropped off by 7:20 AM to allow adequate time to pass through the Evolv system and get to class on time. We appreciate your cooperation.

PSAT Testing: Important, Please Read

On Wednesday, October 9, all sophomores and registered juniors and freshmen will take the PSAT during periods 1-3. Seniors will have a late arrival and should report to the cafeteria by 10:15 AM for a senior assembly. Regular classes will resume for everyone in the fourth period once testing is complete. A QR code will be available for students to check their testing and displacement locations. PSAT testing will be online, and all students must bring a fully charged laptop. Dual credit classes will be asynchronous on Wednesday, so students do not need to report to campus for those classes.

Homecoming Activities

  • Monday: 5:30 PM - Powder Puff

  • Thursday: 2 PM - Homecoming Pep Rally (Family members listed as guardians or contacts may check in starting at 1 PM until maximum capacity is reached in the family section)

  • Friday: Homecoming coronation will occur before the game, starting at 6:40 PM. Please arrive early to get in line. Students must show a physical copy of their student ID; no digital copies will be accepted. Gates open at 6 PM.

For those planning to attend the pep rally next Friday, please be aware of the following details:

  • Pep Rally Time: 2 PM

New Communication System:

MISD has introduced a new communications platform, including Apptegy Rooms, to streamline communication and keep you updated on your child's education.

What is Apptegy Rooms?

Apptegy Rooms is a user-friendly resource accessible via the McKinney ISD mobile app. It allows teachers to share important updates, class announcements, and school events directly with parents. Key features include:

  • Instant Notifications: Receive real-time updates on class activities, homework, and important news.

  • Direct Messaging: Communicate directly with your child's teacher for questions and timely responses.

  • Calendar Integration: Keep track of school events, parent-teacher meetings, and other important dates.

How to Get Started:

  1. Download the McKinney ISD Mobile App: Available for both iOS and Android devices. Search for "McKinney ISD" in the App Store or Google Play.

  2. Create an Account: On Monday, August 19, you received an invite from Apptegy (accounts@edurooms.com) titled "McKinney ISD is inviting you to claim your Rooms account." Follow the prompts using the email address registered with the school.

  3. Connect to Your Child's Class: After logging in, you can connect to your child's classroom.

We believe Apptegy Rooms will enhance our ability to engage with you and support your child’s learning journey. Your involvement is crucial to their success, and this tool will help you stay connected.

Lion Families,

We’ve had a fantastic first full week here at MHS! Thank you to both parents and students for arriving early each day and efficiently navigating the Evolv system. We’ve seen a significant reduction in wait times, with most days having no line at all by 7 a.m. Now that students are accustomed to the new entry procedures and their schedules, we will begin tracking tardies again starting Monday.

Please review the following important information:

GPA Information: The GPA and class rank for the 2023-2024 school year have been finalized and are now available in HAC. If you applied to colleges in June or July using GPA and rank data prior to August 2024, please ensure you update your applications with the finalized numbers now posted in HAC. For any questions, contact your campus registrar.

August 9, 2024

Dear Lion Families,

It was wonderful to see our students back on campus over the past two days! We want to express our pride in the patience and resilience our students showed as they adapted to the new entry procedures with our Evolv Security Detection System. Although the delays on Thursday may have been unexpected, our team anticipated them and had plenty of staff on hand to help students navigate the system as swiftly as possible while we taught them the new procedures.

By Thursday, we successfully got everyone in the building by 8 a.m., and on Friday, we had everyone in and on their way to class by 7:25 a.m. We’re thrilled with how quickly our students adjusted to the new procedures. The company representatives assisting with the implementation noted that our improvement on the second day was the fastest they've ever seen. This success is thanks to our dedicated staff, the support of our central administration, and, of course, you—the families and students. We greatly appreciate your cooperation and prompt arrival, which helped us streamline the process.

Here are a few tips to help us keep things running smoothly:

  • Items to pass outside of the system: Binders, laptops, umbrellas, and eyeglass cases should be ready to be passed around the system to keep the line moving quickly.

  • Items to keep in backpacks: Keys, cell phones, earbuds, headphones, portable batteries, and laptop chargers should be kept in backpacks. Most drink bottles (like Stanleys) don’t trigger the system, so storing them in a side pocket helps. However, drinks with flimsy lids and straws should be avoided as they slow things down.

  • Efficient Entry: Ensure students have nothing in their hands other than what needs to be passed through the system when approaching the Evolv station. Neatly packed backpacks where metallic items don’t cluster together will avoid false alerts. Wearing backpacks on the front helps speed things up.

Important Information for the Upcoming Week:

  • Parent Drop-off:

    • The only designated parent drop-off area is at the front of the building on Wilson Creek by the marquee.

    • The Graves Street parking lot is reserved for staff and drop off of children in our daycare.

    • The back entrance is for buses and staff only. If you drop your child off in the back, your child may have to walk around the building to enter because the Evolv station will not be staffed. We relocate our staff to other duty stations once the bus drop-off is complete.

  • Pictures and Badges: Photographers will be here again on Monday for any students needing a badge. The first badge is free; each additional badge costs $5. Please remind students to keep track of their badges to avoid delays and extra charges.

  • Dress Code: Starting Monday, we will enforce the dress code more strictly. While shorts no longer need to be fingertip length, they should be appropriate for school. Midriffs should not be visible. Students who don’t meet the dress code will need to change.

  • Parent Night: Scheduled for September 9. More details will be shared soon.

  • Device Protection Plans: The Device Protection Plan is now optional and can be purchased on www.myschoolbucks.com. The deadline to opt-in is September 30. After this date, repairs will be charged at full price.

  • Breakfast and Lunch Info: Breakfast is free for all students throughout the year. Free and reduced meal applications are available at www.MySchoolApps.com. The grace period ends on Sept. 20. Benefits for students on free and reduced lunch extend beyond meals.

A Heartfelt Thank You:

Thank you for your support during this time of change. Your efforts to bring your students early and adapt to the new systems have been invaluable. We are thrilled with the improvements we’ve seen and appreciate your continued cooperation.
