McKinney, Texas — Hello! My name is Stephanie O’Dell, and I serve as a McKinney ISD School Board member. Each month, after our board meeting, we will provide our community with a brief summary of events and items covered during the meeting.

We started the September meeting with celebrations and recognitions.

We honored our “We Are McKinney” Superintendent award winners.

Our elementary school winner was Kim Tijerina from Walker Elementary. Mrs. Tijerina, or Mrs. T as her students call her, is the 5th grade math teacher at Walker Elementary.

Our secondary school winner is Kristie Mott from McKinney High School. Ms. Mott is an English Language Arts teacher.

Next we honored our Paraprofessionals of the Month. This month’s elementary school winner is Miriam Richert from Minshew Elementary.

This month’s secondary school winner is Yesenia Quezada from Evans Middle School.

Our “Every Student, Every Day” student award winners this month were:

Luciano Cermi Ortiz from Valley Creek Elementary and Majesty Johnson from Vega Elementary.

We introduced a new award this month - the McKinney ISD Lives Kind Award. Faubion Middle School was chosen to receive the award this month for their implementation of “WOW Wednesdays” and for the acts of kindness that are occurring on their campus! Congratulations, Faubion Middle School.

Our last honors of the evening were the Student Leadership Awards from the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association.

Students from Walker Elementary, Minshew Elementary, and Wilmeth Elementary were honored for their leadership and hard work on their campuses.

We then moved to the presentation portion of the meeting.

Dr. Shelly Spaulding, Assistant Superintendent, presented a follow up of the Apptegy Communication Systems, showcasing how the Thrillshare platform is being used by teachers and administrators in our district.

Jennifer Akins, Chief School Improvement & Federal Programs Officer, and Rusty May, Senior Director of Safety and Security, provided the Board with a strategic plan update for pillar one, which is Safety and Well-Being.

The Board reviewed and approved the consent agenda, and then we moved into the discussion and action portion of the meeting.

Aretha Jackson, Senior Director of Legal Affairs, provided the Board with the TASB Local Policy Update 123. The Board voted to approve the update.

The Board then reviewed and approved the monthly written reports.

Those are the highlights from this month’s meeting. Thank you for watching, and we look forward to bringing you the highlights from our next regularly scheduled board meeting on October 28 at 6 PM.
