McKinney, Texas – While it seems as if summer just got underway, the start of the 2023–2024 school year is quickly approaching—and McKinney ISD couldn’t be more excited.
District and campus leaders joined Superintendent Shawn Pratt at the MISD Community Event Center on July 19 – 20 for the annual MISD Leadership Summit—two days designated each year for MISD leadership to share vision and goals and to move into the final preparations for the upcoming school year. The theme this year: We are McKinney.

The time, as always, was marked by an intensive focus on the work that lies ahead—as well as plenty of laughter and smiles. In his opening address to the assembled leaders of McKinney ISD, Pratt articulated his vision for the district.
“Our mission is ‘Every student, every day.’ It’s simple. It’s going to be our compass moving forward,” he said.
To offer perspective on that mission, Pratt invited a panel of recent MISD graduates and current students for a Q&A session about their experiences as students in McKinney, to talk about the impact that MISD had on them.

Seated on stools across the stage, Caleb Sempebwa (McKinney Boyd graduate), Selim Gurkas (McKinney North student), Nicholas Wesloski (McKinney Boyd student), Caroline Joyce (McKinney High School graduate), Aniya Tubbs (McKinney North graduate) and Josh Berry (McKinney High School graduate) commented on a variety of topics, but particularly on the opportunities they encountered in MISD.
“There are so many opportunities for success,” offered Sempebwa. “McKinney ISD shows how many lanes you could go in for your future, for your success, whether that be [career], whether that be college, whether that be the army or whatever it is, they really try and keep the whole field available for any kid. And, I really, really appreciate that.”
With the new school year just around the corner, MISD is working enthusiastically to put the final pieces in place for the start of school on August 9, so that whether MISD kids are walking through the doors for the first time as kindergarteners or starting their senior year, all will be afforded every opportunity for success—every student, every day.
And, we can’t wait to get started. We look forward to August 9 and hope you’ll enjoy these images from the 2023 Leadership Summit!
