reading trio

The Bennett Bears' Learning Commons has been buzzing with activity lately. From new challenges, to passive programming, students from kindergarten to 5th grade have found something to inspire them.

During the month of February, the BBLC hosted Read Across America. Students were encouraged to read 1 book from each continent. The stories included nonfiction books about the continents, cultural folklore, biographies, and more. During the month, students could also find various puzzles out on the tables to tackle if they had a few extra minutes before returning to class. From brain teasers to traditional puzzles, it was so fun seeing students of all ages work together to solve them.

As March begins, we have transitioned into Read Across America. With the help of the National Education Association, books are selected based on twelve themes. Students are encouraged to read at least 8 books during the month. The BBLC has also partnered with the National Museum of the United States Air Force for class challenges. Each year, the NMUSAF selects books for docents or authors to record a reading and then highlight specific artifacts in their museum. These special events are recorded and made available for registered schools like Bennett Elementary who can't visit in person. This is such a special opportunity for students to take a virtual visit and learn about unique aspects of our history at the same time.

Thanks to the generous grant of the Bennett PTO we were also able to bring a lite brite board into our programming. Students have been delighted to explore the colors, patterns, and are ready to try the new challenges coming their way. Our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade friends have been so excited with our new rotating bookshelf. This installment highlights B.E.E. books, Texas 2x2, and Pre-chapter books that are just right for our beginning readers.

At the same time, our kindergarten students have been expanding their digital technology skills. We started with coding and map skills using Code and Go mouse. This week, students were introduced to Book Creator. Students are creating a book about themselves while learning how to manipulate and insert shapes and images, record videos, and upload images. We cannot wait to see what these students can achieve next!
