Let’s Talk about Screen Time!
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends only an hour of quality screen time a day for children ages 2-5.
All tech isn’t created equal. Be selective and purposeful when allowing young children to watch TV or online programming. Supervise and discuss what they are watching. Just because an app or program says it’s “educational” does not mean it is valuable.
We recommend apps that allow students to practice communicating and creating, like Felt Board, Chatterpix Kids, and Shadow Puppet Edu.
Balance tech and hands-on/play time. Students this age need to be building with blocks, coloring, working puzzles, playing board games, playing dress up, and talking with other people. This is how they learn to be responsible citizens.
When you’re in the car and on short errands, offer a book or magnetic toys instead of a device.
When you’re in a restaurant or at the dinner table, model good social skills by having conversations. This allows children to practice turn taking, waiting, making eye contact, and listening skills.
Never give technology to stop a tantrum. Rewarding inappropriate behavior increases the behavior. It may seem easier in the short term, but you will now have to fight that battle for years.
Finally, limit or avoid screen time within hours of bedtime. Opt for a great story and a cuddle instead.
