McKinney Fire Department Safety Squad Program Brings Safety Lessons to MISD Second Graders

“Ok, cover your ears because it’s going to be pretty loud,” Merit Ossian said to the group of Vega Elementary second graders before pressing the test button on the smoke detector in her hands. It made a horrible noise—but a potentially lifesaving one.

And, that’s what brought Ossian—who serves as public relations officer and education coordinator for the McKinney Fire Department—to Vega Elementary on a rainy Monday morning, along with MFD Assistant Chief Sean Stephens, McKinney Police Officer Shannon Seabrook and Anna Simmons from the McKinney Office of Emergency Management, to kick off the first MFD Safety Squad session.

Designed for MISD second graders, the Safety Squad pilot program will visit 11 MISD elementary campuses this year and 10 next year to teach vital safety skills during a designated P.E. period.

Vapes and THC: What Parents Need to Know

Across the state of Texas, vaping has become a growing concern among all ages of kids, and it's crucial for parents to stay informed. E-cigarettes and other vaping devices are often marketed as safer alternatives to smoking, but they contain harmful chemicals that can seriously affect a young person’s developing lungs and brain. Nicotine, a primary substance in most vaping products, is highly addictive and can lead to long-term health problems. Another recent concern of many police departments is the additional substances including THC, and the potency of them, that can be found within vapes. Local police departments have stated that smoke shops are advertising, marketing, and selling items that fall under the legal limit; however, upon police testing, they actually contain concentrations of THC well over the legal limit. The reality is these products often have a much higher percentage of THC which can result in felony charges for someone who thought they were buying a legal product.

As parents, staying aware of vaping trends and talking openly with your children is vital. Encourage them to make healthy choices, and be on the lookout for signs of vaping, such as unusual odors or a sudden interest in vaping devices. Educating your child about the dangers can prevent serious health risks and set them on the path to healthier habits.

Recently, CBS News produced a video with several Collin County Police Department Chiefs and Sheriff Jim Skinner about their growing concerns and the impact it’s having on our youth. The video provides information that is important for parents, and we want to share it with our parents and guardians. You can find the video here.

Stay informed, talk regularly, and reach out to school or community resources for support. Together, we can help keep our kids safe.
